I cease to be amazed at the servant heart of Jesus. As a servant Jesus was concerned for others and looked to others' interests rather than His own. This is the essence and heart of the Christian message and Christianity. If you miss this you are missing the reason why we live, why we do things for others and how we can do things with a view to not expecting anything in return. Selfishness, self-interest goes to the back seat, attitudes like "what's in it for me" or "what can I get out of that situation" are shown up as stark opposites to the attitude of Christ and the Scriptures. Paul in Phillipians 2.1-11 said, 1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus….
A true servant heart is one of pure love and unity with no selfish ambition and deceit. It esteems others better than themselves and looks to the interests of others just as Christ has give us an example of. Servanthood expects absolutely nothing in return but gives and goes on giving because it is a response to God who gives and goes on giving to us. It has an eye on Christ and the rewards of God in eternity and not from what people could ever give us. The cross stands out as the epitome of servanthood for the world. Soak your minds and heart in the depths of the cross, plummet the depths and chew on the cud of the love of Christ and servanthood will be second nature. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus….
